Chapter 3
This chapter starts off like this: Maniac Magee was running around town when he ran into Amanda Beale. She was heading for school and Maniac realized she had a suitcase instead of a backpack or book bag. Maniac thought she was running away, but she wasn't, she was just heading to school like a normal person. So he stopped and said "hi". But since he was in the East End, where all the people are black and he's white, Amanda knew something wasn't right. So she said hi back and Maniac asked if she was running away. She got kind of confused but then realized he was pointing at the suitcase and started to laugh ... a lot! She opened the suitcase for Maniac and he saw books! Tons of books! He read the titles of all of them, and was amazed. Then she was going to be late for school and left, but before she could get far, Maniac called and said he would carry it for her. She hesitated and then said no. She knew Maniac wasn't from the East End, and she wasn't about to trust him. Then Maniac asked for a book to borrow, begged actually. She finally gave in and gave him a book, threw it at him actually because she was going to be late. The book was called The Children's Crusade. He picked up the book and Amanda was late for school, for the first time.

Chapter 22

Maniac Magee is sleeping in the Bison cage again but this time the zoo keeper, Grayson comes along and sees Maniac beside the baby bison and suddenly shrieks "A kid!" His clothes were rags, he was covered in scratches, so he takes Maniac out of the cage, lays him on the back of the truck, and takes him to the band shell. He waits for Maniac to wake up and when he does the first thing he says is "hey" and "where am I?" not knowing who Grayson is. He gets Maniac some food until he's full. Then Grayson gets to know Maniac and realizes that he used to live on Sycamore, the East End which is where black people stay, white people are in the West End. Grayson has no more questions to ask, so Maniac asks if he wants to know why he was in the bison cage. Grayson says sure and, well, Maniac thought it was the dear pen. It was dark out side so he couldn't really see much. Then Grayson and Maniac finally go and get the butterscotch krimpets.

Chapter 31

This chapter starts off like this: It's Christmas morning and Maniac's awake. He wakes up Grayson and they go out and walk around the snowy zoo to go visit their tree, the one they decorated because one wasn't enough. Then they walked back and said "Merry Christmas" to all of the animals. When they reached the Bison cage, Maniac climbed in and they had a nice reunion, then Maniac brings out a present for the baby bison. A scarf, three actually. For breakfast they had eggnog, hot tea, cookies, carols, and love. Then they opened presents, Grayson opened his first, Maniac got him a woolen cap and a book that Maniac had made. The title was The Man Who Struck Out Willie Mays. Then it was Maniac's turn, Grayson got him a pair of gloves, a box of butterscotch krimpets, and a white, never-been-used baseball. But that wasn't all, Grayson also had another gift... hidden. It was the old baseball glove Grayson used to have, the one that he used in the minors. Maniac loved all the gifts, especially the glove. He fit his hand in, it and cracked the leather came back to life. When the record player had finished there was a long silence. Five days later on December 31st, Grayson had died.
